Post haste direct mail services7/27/2023 ![]() ![]() It’s also strange for Downie to remove Glasser at a time when his own days are numbered, with newsroom chatter placing his exit near the end of 2008. Eighteen months ago, Glasser’s aggressive style was well-known throughout the newsroom, and Downie heard skepticism about his choice. Indeed, Downie had promoted Glasser from Outlook editor in late 2006, so the move amounts to an acknowledgment of regret in his own judgment. “The looming question is, Why now?” said a national staffer. Neither Downie nor managing editor Phil Bennett returned calls or e-mails seeking comment on removing Glasser. She was being removed, far ahead of Downie’s schedule. On Monday, Glasser had just returned to the newsroom, following a weeklong vacation in Spain with her husband, White House correspondent Peter Baker, when Downie brought her into his office. It’s no secret that besides her formidable talent as an editor, Glasser showed sharp elbows and a willingness to embrace conflict while rising quickly through the Post’s ranks.ĭownie, who had previously given promotions, now offered an ultimatum: Glasser had three months to improve national desk morale or else, according to a Post source. ![]()
